Duwa House Baddagana
Built in Sri Lanka’s administrative capitol Kotte in the leafy Baddagana Sub Urbs, Duwa House is a compact Ground + Two storied house overlooking the Sri Lankan Parliament and the lake surrounding it. In order to facilitate ‘views’ of the parliament lake located at the rear of the site, part of the Ground Floor was raised by 5’-0” feet (1.5m) so that uppermost floor is raised above the roof scape of adjoining houses. The house employs a gently sloping mono-pitched roof sloping towards the rear of the site.
Baddagana suburb of Kotte has undergone sub division of larger lands due to Sri Lankan parliament shifting towards the East of Colombo from the commercial capital Colombo to ease congestion in the capitol. The result is increase in land prices in Kotte in turn resulting in sub division of valuable land in the area. Therefore the land available to build was limited to two hundred square meters, hence the decision to build vertical in addition to the ability get good views of Parlaiment Lake. The house was designed with a front trapped courtyard ventilating the guest bedroom and a rear garden running the length of the land ventilating the rear sections of the house and facilitation of light and ventilation from front and rear facades. Blank party walls on either side give privacy from adjoining residences on either side.
A narrow linear Living Dining area is positioned along the above mentioned rear garden while guest bedroom in Ground Floor overlooks a trapped courtyard at front. The house is served by two car port garage and service facilities to the front and public areas such as living dining are positioned along rear garden. Living is a double height space, visually and physically linking Ground & First Floors, without segregating the house into disconnected levels. This double height is overlooked by a TV Room and Family living in the upper floors while bedrooms are tucked to the front of the house. Master Bedroom is positioned in second Floor with access to generous roof terrace overlooking the panoramic views of the Sri Lankan Parliament, the lake surrounding it and the marshes encircling the lake.
